The O-circle is usually a circular molded elastomer with a circular cross-section. The O-ring can also be an indefinite rope (similar to a rubber band) and made of other materials such as plastic. O-ring seals are able to be sealed at relatively high pressure because they are compressed or " activated when pressurized, and when pressure is applied to the O-ring, it is deformed in the lid or groove. When the silicone O-ring forms between two flat and smooth surfaces, it presses into the lid wall and seals the joint. Compression powers the seal and creates a mechanical barrier preventing the fluid from passing; this constraint allows the silicone O-ring to be sealed at higher pressures than many flat washers.
